Earning Hotel Elite status is one of the best ways to make your travel experience more rewarding and enjoyable. From upgrades and bonus points to free breakfast, there can be a big difference between staying an elite and non-elite member. But how do you quantify the value that status brings?
In this guide, we'll try to do just that with one of the largest and most popular hotel loyalty programs in the world: Marriott Bonvoy.
While the merger of the three legacy programs (Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards) into Marriott Bonvoy takes a backseat, we continue to see program changes.Fully dynamic prize pricingwas one of the main concerns.
A lot has changed, so this review will delve into the combined program and attempt to answer a simple question: Is Marriott Bonvoy's elite status worth aiming for (or maintaining) in 2023?
Before I continue, let me start with the usual disclaimer: The following calculations represent just one way to estimate the value of elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program.
You may not eat a lot for breakfast and therefore may not be interested in this benefit. Or maybe you're traveling on business and don't want to be upgraded to a larger room upon check-in. Feel free to adjust the numbers based on your personal travel habits and the amount you would enjoy each applicable benefit.
Also, all of these numbers are based on the amount of benefits you would receive after achieving each status and continuing to qualify each year thereafter. If you start from scratch, you won't get the benefits from day one. I've included a review for those in this position at the end of the post.
In conclusion, it's important to highlight the key assumptions we make to arrive at the final values for each Marriott Bonvoy elite status level:
Subscribe to our daily newsletter
- You complete 20% more nights than the minimum required for each level.
- They spend an average of $150 per night on eligible expenses.
- Their average stay is two nights.
I'll also use the following Marriott-specific assumption:
- Your stays will be evenly split between full-service hotels (such as Westin and Renaissance) and limited-service hotels (such as Fairfield Inn or SpringHill Suites).
As always, adjust these numbers according to your individual travel habits.
Two final reminders: For this review I am basing the value of the bonus points you earnThe latest TPG reviews, which value Marriott points by 0.84 cents each. I've also rounded all reviews to the nearest $5 to keep the numbers simple.

Marriott Bonvoy Plata Elite (US$ 35)
The lowest level in the Marriott Bonvoy program is Silver Elite status, which is typically achieved after 10 nights. Also included as an automatic benefit are the 15 elite night credits you would earn per year using some of the co-branded credit cards currently available: theUnlimited Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cardit's himMarriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Cardby Chase.
I'm assuming you have six 12-night stays, split evenly between full-service and limited-service Marriott properties for this review.
|extra points||Earn 10% more points than regular members. This is an additional point per dollar spent at most hotels (but only an additional 0.5 points at Element, Residence Inn, and TownePlace Suites locations). For 12 nights and an average nightly rate of $150, that adds 1,800 bonus points.||$ 15|

Marriott Bonvoy Gold-Elite (US$ 805)
Gold Elite status is the second tier in the Marriott Bonvoy program, usually earned after 25 nights. There are several credit cards that include or allow you to obtain this status:
- Tarjeta Platinum Card® da American Expressautomatically gives you Gold Elite status.
- The Ritz-Carlton Rewards credit card (is no longer open to new applicants) automatically gives you Gold Elite status.
- HeUnlimited Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cardallows you to earn Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 on purchases per account year.
- HeMarriott Bonvoy Bevy™ Tarjeta American Express®automatically gives you Gold Elite status.
- HeMarriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Tarjetaallows you to earn Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 on purchases per account year.
Ritz-Carlton Rewards credit card information was independently collected by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been verified or provided by the card issuer.
Most Bonvoy branded cards reward you too15 elite night credits per year, allowing cardholders to reach Gold status with just 10 additional qualifying elite nights. You are limited to 15 personal card credits per Marriott Bonvoy account. You can only accumulate Elite Night Credits on Business Cards and Personal Cards, which brings your maximum to 40 Elite Night Credits per year. Also note that theMarriott Bonvoy Brilliant® Tarjeta American Express®Includes 25 annual elite nights.
I'm assuming you're doing 15 30-night stays split evenly between full- and limited-service Marriott hotels.
|extra points||Earn 25% more points than a regular member, which equals an additional 2.5 points per dollar spent at most hotels. Since I'm assuming 30 nights at an average price of $150 per night, that adds up to an additional 11,250 points worth $95.||$ 95.|
|Late check-out preferred||Gold members benefit from priority late check-out until 2 pm, subject to availability.||$ 50|
|improved internet||Gold members can enjoy faster speeds with free enhanced Internet access.||$ 15|
|Zimmer Updates||Gold members are eligible for upgrades to upgraded rooms at check-in. This may include rooms on upper floors, rooms with superior amenities, or rooms on the executive floor, but not suites.|
I will use the same $20 per night rating used in other elite hotel status guides.
It should be noted that this applies to almost all Marriott brands with the exception of Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Aloft, Element and Vistana.
|welcome gift||Receive a welcome bonus of Marriott Points at check-in, whether it's 250 points for limited-service hotels or 500 points for full-service locations.|
Using the assumed split above, you would earn an average of 375 points (worth about $3) for each of your 15 stays.
|No total||$ 805.|

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite (US$ 2.495)
The third tier of the Marriott Bonvoy program is Platinum Elite, which typically requires 50 nights. This compares to the Gold status of the legacy Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs.
Just like the Gold Elite, you also have a few ways to get this status through your credit card:
- HeMarriott Bonvoy Brilliant® Tarjeta American Express®automatically provide you with Platinum Elite status.
- Spending $75,000 on the now-discontinued Ritz-Carlton Rewards Card in one year of card membership.
I'm assuming you complete 30 stays of 60 nights, split evenly between full-service and limited-service Marriott hotels for this review.
|extra points||Platinum Elite members earn 50% more points on paid stays than regular members.|
This works out to an additional 5 points per dollar spent. Assuming 60 nights at an average price of $150 per night, you'll take home an additional 45,000 points worth $380.
|Late check-out preferred||Platinum members are guaranteed at 4pm. m. Late check-out with some exceptions. Subject to availability at resorts, conventions and designer hotels and not available for stays at Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club and participating Vistana properties.||$ 125.|
|Dedicated phone support||Platinum Elite members receive access to a dedicated Elite phone line that can be helpful if you need assistance with a reservation.||$ 20|
|improved internet||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 60|
|Upgrades to advanced rooms, including suites||Platinum Elite members enjoy upgrades to larger capacity rooms, including suites, at check-in (but not at Ritz-Carlton properties).|
However, Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, participating Vistana hotels, Aloft hotels and Element hotels are excluded.
We are increasing the rating slightly, estimating it at $35 per night for full-service stays and using a much lower figure of $5 per night for limited-service accommodations.
|lounge access||Guaranteed access to the Club Lounge at the following hotels: JW Marriott, Marriott, Delta hotels (non-resorts), Autograph Collection, Renaissance, Sheraton, Le Meridien and Westin.|
If the lounge is closed or the hotel does not have a lounge, you will be entitled to breakfast at the hotel's restaurant or 750 points on legacy Marriott brands.
At the time of writing, these brands represent approximately 25% of the programming portfolio, so I estimate a value of $10 per night for 15 of the 60 nights.
|welcome gift||It gets a little complicated how the program handles welcome gifts for Platinum Elite travelers. What seems simple on the surface ("points, breakfast specials or amenities") quickly becomes complicated when you look at all 32 brands.|
Breakfast is included for everyone at select brands, available as a welcome gift for Platinum members at others, and available in the lounge as a separate Platinum benefit at others.
For a full breakdown of these benefits, check out this handy guide.Marriott Breakfast Benefitsand remember that some services are brand dependent. However, I put that gift at $10 per night at full-service locations, and since brands like Fairfield and SpringHill Suites offer 500 points per stay, at $4 per stay at limited-service hotels.
|annual election profit||Platinum Elite members are eligible for an annual election benefit upon qualification. You can choose between:|
We recommend Suite Night Awards as you can confirm a basic suite up to five days prior to check-in, although this is property specific and cannot be guaranteed. I put them at $40 each.
|No total||$ 2.495.|

Marriott Bonvoy Titanio Elite (US$ 4.685)
The next level in the Marriott Rewards program is Titanium Elite status. This level is usually reached after 75 nights (comparable to the former Marriott Platinum). I assume you complete 90 nights and split them evenly between full-service and limited-service Marriott hotels for this review.
|extra points||Titanium members receive a 75% bonus on paid stays, which translates to an additional 7.5 points per dollar spent at most hotels in the Marriott portfolio.|
Based on my guess for 90 nights at an average rate of $150 per night, you will receive an additional 101,250 points worth $850.
|Late check-out preferred||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 175.|
|Dedicated phone support||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 30|
|improved internet||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 90|
|Upgrades to advanced rooms, including suites||The room upgrade benefit for Titanium members is almost identical to that of regular Platinum members, except suites at Ritz-Carlton properties are included.|
I'm following the same ratings ($35 per night in full-service hotels and $5 per night in limited-service hotels) with an additional $200 for the additional suite option at Ritz-Carlton hotels.
|lounge access||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 225.|
|welcome gift||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 540.|
|annual election profit||Upon reaching 50 Elite qualifying nights in the Marriott Bonvoy program, you may select one of the benefit options listed above, but reaching 75 Elite qualifying nights unlocks an additional benefit option.|
With two exceptions, you have the same options as above. You can gift a friend/family member Elite Gold status instead of Silver. You also have the option to earn a free night (valid at hotels with up to 40,000 points).
We maintain our estimate of $50 per night, for a figure of $500 when factoring in the Annual Choice Benefit earned over 50 nights.
|Status Elite Silver Premier United||United and Marriott have partnered to create theRewardsPlus MembershipThis automatically grants Titanium Elite members United Premier Silver status.|
UsWertThat tier is $495, though the actual benefit depends on how often you fly United. We assume conservative usage and assign a value of $200.
|No total||4.685 $.|

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite (US$ 6.445)
The highest level in the Marriott program is Bonvoy Ambassador Elite. You must reach 100 Elite Qualifying Nights and $23,000 in Qualifying Spend to qualify for this tier. For this review, I'm assuming you'll be staying 120 nights, again evenly split between full-service and limited-service properties, but to hit the $23,000 mark, I'll bump your nightly rate to $195.
|extra points||Same benefit, but for 120 nights and an average price of $195 per night, you earn an additional 175,500 points, worth approximately $1,475.||1.475 $.|
|Late check-out preferred||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 225.|
|Dedicated phone support||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 40|
|improved internet||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 120.|
|Upgrades to advanced rooms, including suites||Same benefit, more frequent use.||2.600 $.|
|lounge access||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 300.|
|welcome gift||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 720.|
|annual election profit||You will not receive additional Choice Benefits for more than 100 nights, so we will keep the same amount.||$ 500.|
|Status Elite Silver Premier United||Same benefit, more frequent use.||$ 265.|
|Ambassador Service||In the past, Marriott provided each Ambassador Elite member with their own dedicated Ambassador to handle reservations and other requests.|
Unfortunately, this was discontinued whenMarriott Fired Its Ambassadorsin response to the coronavirus pandemic. They announced thatdedicated ambassadors will return in 2023, which could add even more value to this benefit. For now, we'll be conservative, pricing this benefit at $100.
|mil24||The second (and final) exclusive benefit of Ambassador Elites is the Your24 benefit, which allows you to choose your check-in and check-out times.|
However, its flexibility is subject to availability and many reports suggest it is unpredictable, so we've set it at $100.

What if I start from scratch?
Of course, as I mentioned earlier, all of the above numbers represent values for those who have already reached these status levels. However, without status in the new Marriott program, you can start from scratch. In this case, you will not enjoy any benefits until you have stayed 10 nights and achieved Silver Elite status. After that, you won't enjoy any additional benefits until you reach 25 nights of Gold Elite status. How can you quantify this rise in ranks?
As I did for the airline's elite status series, I attempted to answer this by converting the above calculations into a nightly value, as follows:
- Marriott Bonvoy Silver: $35/12 nights = $2.92 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold: $805 / 30 nights = $26.83 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum: $2,495 / 60 nights = $41.58 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Titanium: $4,685/90 nights = $52.05 per night.
- Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador: $6,445/120 nights = $53.71 per night.
Let's say you plan to stay 60 nights at Marriott hotels this year. If you start from scratch, get no benefits for the first 10 nights, enjoy Silver benefits for the next 15 nights (at a cost of $2.92 per night), then enjoy Gold benefits for the next 25 nights (at a cost of $2.92 per night). cost of US$ 2.92 per night). ). night). from $26.83 per night), and finally enjoy Platinum benefits for the last 10 nights (at a cost of $41.58 per night). So if you start from scratch and estimate that you'll spend 60 nights at Marriott hotels in 2023, you'll get $1,130.35 in program value.

Is it worth chasing Marriott's elite status?
Given these values, is it worth pursuing elite status (or the next level of elite status) in the Marriott program?
As with all the reviews we carry out here at TPG, there is no easy answer as it completely depends on your particular situation. However, here are some general questions that might help you make up your mind:
- How much will you travel in the future?When aiming for elite status, it's important to think about the amount of travel you will be doing in the future. For example, if you work hard to earn Platinum, the valuable benefits described above only apply when you actually travel.
- What is the incremental value of one level over another?Many of you may end up within walking distance of the next level, so consider whether it's worth the extra profits. It's no use bothering with advantages that don't interest you.
- How well does Marriott's geographic coverage match your typical travel habits?There really is no point in chasing elite status with a hotel chain if you can't stay at one (or more) of their properties on a regular basis. Consider the various Marriott hotels in and around your shared travel destinations.
- How sensitive are you to price and convenience?There are many pros and cons to this hobby, and one of the most common is deciding whether to use your favorite airline or hotel chain when they aren't the most convenient or inexpensive. Would you stay at a hotel under the Marriott umbrella if there was another brand that was cheaper and/or more convenient to stay in? If the answer is no, it may not be worth it to get elite status (or elite status at any hotel chain) with the Marriott program.
- Is a credit card the best option?As mentioned above, many credit cards include elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program. As a result, it's better to just open one of them and enjoy it without worrying about sorting (or reclassing) the hard way.
These questions are not easy to answer as many different factors play a role. Still, it's worth evaluating your own situation when determining whether or not Marriott's elite status is for you.
